What is stress
Stress is a feeling that is created when we react to certain events. It is our body's way of preparing for a tough situation with heightened alertness, strength, stamina and focus. Stress equals high adrenaline which means less of the brain's natural tranquilizer and that leads to high anxiety.
We do need some stress in our lives to motivate us, but it should be short term stress. Like before a test you feel nervous about it, but once it starts you feel fine again. Stress is a problem in our lives because we were created for a calmer lifestyle and now we are living at a much faster pace. When our brain senses stress it automatically assumes that there is an emergency . It also assumes that there is a danger of some sort and it activates the fight or flight response.
In the United Kingdom roughly 13 million working days are lost every year due to stress. Stress is believed to cause 70% of the visits to the doctor and 85% of serious illnesses (UK HSE stress statistics).
